Sterling to commit future to Liverpool.
Raheem Sterling is set to sign a new long-term contract at Liverpool, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.
The 17-year-old winger has been a revelation at Anfield this season and played a key role in the 3-0 win over Wigan at the weekend.
But Sterling, who made his England debut earlier this month, cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 18 next month – opening the door for other clubs to swoop for the youngster.
Rodgers is unconcerned by that situation because he is confident that the player is enjoying life with the Reds.
“The message is very simple – any club wanting to sign him would be wasting his time,” said Rodgers.
“Raheem is in a really good place here. He has been given an opportunity here this season and he is thriving on it and enjoying the work.
“He will tie himself down to a new contract because he wants to be here and he can be a ‘great’ at this football club.
“We want him to continue to grow, and why would you want to leave one of the biggest clubs in world football? So it’s a no-brainer.”

Great news Liverpool fans.
Raheem Sterling has been a breath of fresh air this season and his good form, coupled with that of Luis Suarez, is one of the reasons Liverpool are slowly climbing the league under Brendan Rodgers.
Sterling was again lively as the Reds beat Wigan 3-0 on Saturday, providing two assists and running the Latics’ back-line ragged.
The 17-year-old was rewarded for his form with his first England cap last week and pundits have tipped him to be a regular in Roy Hodgson’s side before long.
However, there have been rumours that Sterling, who moved to Merseyside from London club QPR, was homesick in Liverpool and wanted a return to London, with Arsenal reportedly prepared to offer Theo Walcott and £8m in exchange for the teenager in January.
A new contract, reportedly worth £30,000 a week, will put to bed such speculation and Liverpool fans can be quietly confident of a top six finish (or even higher) if Rodgers is given money to strengthen his squad in January.
