Etihad Stadium side join race to land Shakhtar midfielder.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has joined the race for Shakhtar Donetsk’s brilliant Brazilian attacking star Willian.
Mancini sent top spy Gary Worthington to watch Willian in action as City look for more flair after their second Champions League group-phase failure in as many years.
The 24-year-old has been chased by Chelsea and Tottenham in recent transfer windows, and now City have joined his list of his admirers.

Moves to capture 24 year old Brazilian Willian have been ongoing for some months now and though Man City’s involvement in any bidding war will come as sweet music to Shakhtar Donetsk’s ears it would seem less likely that they would sell the goal-scoring midfielder now that they have secured safe passage to the Champions League knockout stages.
Chelsea know from first hand experience what Willian is capable of having seen the former Corinthians star net twice at Stamford Bridge and Tottenham were said to be close to securing the player’s signature in the summer but Roberto Mancini will hope to win the race to sign the Shakhtar flair player.
One does wonder where exactly Willian would fit into the Italian’s crammed starting eleven though perhaps Mancini is considering a re-shuffling of his Man City pack as the big spending club’s owners seem less willing to fork out huge sums to further improve the club’s squad, not least because they will pay the financial cost of failing to qualify from the Champions League group stages.
Willian will feel he has gone as far as he can with Shakhtar having spent six seasons at the Ukrainian side and winning four domestic titles in the process.
