Old Trafford side keen on Udinese man.
Mehdi Benatia welcomes Manchester United and Tottenham transfer talk
Udinese star Mehdi Benatia has welcomed speculation linking him with a move to either Manchester United or Tottenham during the January transfer window.
French-born Benatia, who has 20 caps for Morocco, has long been considered one of the classiest central defenders in Europe, having stepped up since his move to Udinese from Clermont in 2010.
It’s a reputation that has seen him linked with moves to Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past, while a number of Premier League clubs are known to have had scouts check on him in the last 18 months.
It is thought Udinese would be willing to do business in January if either United or Spurs meet their £15million valuation because Lorient’s Bruno Ecuele Manga is already being lined up as a cut-price replacement.
Man United could well do with some defensive reinforcements having conceded goals at an alarming rate this season and Sir Alex Ferguson may feel that January is the time to strengthen at the back.
Though Ferguson can point to injuries to Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at various points in the campaign as being reasons for the problems in the Man United defence it is also worth noting that Rio Ferdinand has struggled when called upon as such the Premier League table toppers could do with considering alternative options.
Benatia has been a consistent performer at Udinese over the past two and a half years, helping the Stadio Fruili to continually punch above their weight and no doubt the Moroccan international would be tempted by a move to Man United though one wonders if Ferguson would be willing to meet the Serie A side’s £15m valuation.
