Frank Lampard is a sensational transfer target for Arsenal.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is weighing up the astonishing move for the 34-year-old Chelsea midfield star.

The England international is in the final year of his contract and Chelsea’s new boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that Lampard will be free to leave at the end of the season.

This source believes that Arsene Wenger is ready to put an end to his youthful transfer policy as he targets Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard in a move that can, and has been, described as sensational.

The 34 year old England man is in the final year of his current Chelsea contract and as yet has not been offered a new deal. Indeed any new deal would in all likelihood be a one year extension, as is Blues club policy for players over the age of 30.

The former West Ham man has been linked with apparent interest from both the MLS and a number of sides in the Chinese Premier League but one would imagine that the Londoner would be open to any deal that would keep him employed in the English top tier.

There are of course a number of reasons why this bit of speculation that has no basis in reality. Firstly Arsenal also have a policy of only offering short term contracts to veteran players so will a one year Gunners deal even appeal to Lampard? Secondly any offer to land the Stamford Bridge hero would presumably have to entail a wage offer somewhere in the region of his current salary, which is by some distance more than any player currently employed by the North London club.

Finally, and perhaps most crucially, Arsene Wenger has an ocean of midfield talent at his disposal and if the Arsenal boss is to invest in his squad in January, which seems very likely, it will surely be other areas that get much needed attention.

After all Wenger has the likes of Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby to employ in central midfield roles and whilst they haven’t been at their best these are players that more than fill their respective roles.
