Old Trafford side keen on Athletic Bilbao youngster.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is back on the trail of Athletic Bilbao midfield dynamo Oscar de Marcos.
Ferguson sent brother Martin, his top European scout, to watch de Marcos against Barcelona as he re-opens his file on the dynamic 23-year-old who dazzled against the Reds last season.
De Marcos was wanted by United in the summer but his high valuation – £25million at the time – put Fergie off the deal and he ploughed his cash into signing Robin van Persie.
Now Ferguson is looking for fresh midfield legs again, with Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs coming towards the end of their careers, and Bilbao may lower the price on de Marcos after a poor season.
The Europa League finalists of six months ago have been strugglers in La Liga this season and many stars are eyeing the exit door at the Basque club.
United would still have to find around £20m for de Marcos.

Man United have been linked with interest in Oscar de Marcos pretty much since the two sides met in Europa League action last term, when Athletic Bilbao made light work of beating the Old Trafford side both home and away and the midfielder netted in both legs.
The adaptable Spaniard can play in a number of positions, as well as his more common central midfield role the former Alaves man has been known to pitch in at full-back and even as a forward. The 23 year old could well be a very useful addition to the Man United squad, especially as he would be eligible for Champions League duty.
Given that Athletic Bilbao sitting low down in La Liga, in 15th spot just three points from the drop zone, a move for Oscar de Marcos may be all the more likely. Marcelo Bielsa may well see his talented side raided by a number of interested parties in January and next summer with many looking to follow Javi Martinez’s lead and make the step up to a ‘bigger’ side.
Fernando Llorente is also likely to leave San Mames having entered the final year of his contract and with no sign of the big forward looking to put pen to paper on a new deal.
Ferguson could well do with some fresh midfield options with the Scot having to rely heavily on Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick greatly thus far this term. Though Brazilian Anderson has certainly picked up his form the Man United boss would do well to bring in a box to box performer like De Marcos next month.
