Barcelona Plot Ambitious Move to Sign Borussia Dortmund Trio

Nou Camp side line up Bundesliga raid.

Spanish source claim that Barcelona are eyeing up three of Borussia Dortmund’s top talents as Nou Camp boss Tito Vilanova looks to strengthen his squad.

The La Liga giants are keen on improving their defensive options, which are surprisingly threadbare and have left Argentine Javier Mascherano often having to fill in as a makeshift centre-back due to the lack of options available. This issue is all the more pronounced given that Gerard Pique has had injury issues and veteran Carles Puyol at 34 is clearly in the latter stages of his Barcelona career.

Vilanova has offered youngster Marc Bartra more of a chance to prove himself but Barcelona have still struggled defensively this term. Despite sitting top of the table the Catalan side have only the sixth best defence in terms of goals conceded and have managed just four clean sheets in 14 league matches this season.

With that in mind Barcelona’s interest in Dortmund centre-back pairing Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels is perhaps unsurprising, especially as the duo have been incredibly consistent for the Westfalenstadion side over the past two and a half years, helping Jurgen Klopp’s side to back to back Bundesliga titles.

The third Dortmund target comes in the form of highly rated German midfielder Mario Gotze. The 20 year old has become the mainstay of Klopp’s successful spell and is now a regular in the national team set-up and a player who certainly fits Barcelona’s flair football philosophy.

The starlet could perhaps be seen as an ideal addition to the Barcelona midfield but one would have to wonder just where Gotze would fit into the current starting eleven, which is already jam packed with incredibly talented individuals.

Dortmund boss Klopp has struggled to keep hold of his very best talent having seen Shinji Kagawa and Nuri Sahin leave for Man United and Real Madrid respectively and given the fact that his side are now some 11 points behind rivals Bayern Munich one would imagine the task of preventing star performers leaving the club has only gotten more problematic.
