The Gunners are seeking to shore up things at the back by bringing in young France international in January.
Arsene Wenger wants to solve any defensive struggles by adding Montpellier stalwart Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the upcoming transfer window, according to the Metro.
The 23-year old club captain wants to leave, following his side’s elimination from the Champions League group stage and this has sparked a revival of Arsenal’s interest, as they are in desperate need of defensive cover and solidity.
Wenger has coveted Yanga-Mbiwa for some time now, admiring his versatility, as he is able to play anywhere across the defensive line. The French manager believes his strong personality and leadership qualities can be huge assets to his current Arsenal side who at times lack focus and direction.
He had previously been linked with Chelsea and AC Milan, but the North London outfit are thought to be the front-runners for his signature, having scouted him closely for a while.
Arsenal defenders Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci are both set to leave the Emirates in January, which would free up room on the wage bill for Yanga-Mbiwa’s signing. He is expected to be available for a cut-down price, since he has refused to sign a new contract with the struggling French champions.
