Former Chelsea manager linked with German move.
Italian source Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Bundesliga side Schalke are interested in offering former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo a job as the club’s new manager.
Schalke sacked Huub Stevens last weekend despite the fact that the 59 year old Dutchman had steered his club to the last 16 of the Champions League having avoided defeat in the group stage. However the Gelsenkirchen based side sit in seventh spot in the domestic table having finished last season in third place and as such the former PSV Eindhoven boss was axed.
Jens Keller has been brought in to replace Stevens but perhaps this was only a short term solution as Schalke are now sniffing around Di Matteo, who was rather harshly sacked by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich just six months after he guided the Blues to a Champions League triumph.
Di Matteo’s overall record as Chelsea boss was a relatively impressive one, winning 24 games of the 42 matches he took charge of at Stamford Bridge.
He has since been replaced on an interim basis by Spaniard Rafa Benitez.
