Arsenal are exploring an audacious swoop for Barcelona striker David Villa.

But it is the possible capture of Villa that will excite Arsenal fans going into the festive period.

Arsene Wenger and his backroom team have discussed a January swoop for Villa, a forward the Gunners boss has admired for several years.

The Gunners would rather take the 31-year-old on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent deal depending on how he takes to the Premier League.

But if the price is right, Arsenal would stretch to a long term deal in January.

Clearly Arsene Wenger is not known for bringing players over the age of 30 but may feel that David Villa is an individual who he would be willing to make an exception for.

It would be fair to say that the former Valencia goal machine’s move to the Nou Camp has not quite cracked up to be quite how Villa, and Barcelona, would have hoped.

A combination of injury issues and average form have left the Spanish international struggling to retain a lengthy run in the Barcelona starting eleven and now David Villa finds himself behind Alexis Sanchez, Pedro and at time Cristian Tello in Tito Vilanova’s side. Therefore the 31 year old may jump at the chance of a chance to prove himself in the Premier League.

Arsenal could well do with alternative attacking options and a move to bring in Villa on an initial loan move could well be on the cards, though a lot could depend on whether Barcelona feel that the experienced striker is needed to help add strength in depth to their front-line.

Villa has netted 40 goals in 91 appearances for Barcelona since his £33m move to the Catalan giants two and a half years ago.

Arsenal currently rely on Olivier Giroud to lead the line though Arsene Wenger has finally shown signs that he is willing to allow Theo Walcott to play in his preferred striking role, selecting the 23 year old for the Gunners recent 5-2 mauling of Reading.
