Arsenal to Make £15m ‘January Gamble’

Arsene Wenger is ready to take a January gamble by bidding for the man dubbed the “new David Villa” ahead of the old one.

Arsenal made an enquiry about Barcelona striker Villa, but Wenger is worried about splashing out £12m and £100,000-a-week on a 31-year-old.

It means Wenger has prioritised Atletico Madrid’s Adrian Lopez, who has been called a younger version of Villa in Spain.

Lopez has a buyout clause of nearly £15m, but his wage demands are significantly cheaper than Villa’s and he only turns 25 on January 8.

Wenger was given a timely reminder of Lopez’s ability on Friday night, as he netted the winner in Atletico’s 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo.

Arsene Wenger doesn’t have a massive track record for forking out fees over £10m and it was something of a pleasant surprise to Arsenal fans when the Gunners boss brought in three established talents over the summer, spending in excess of £35m to bring in Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla, though clearly the happiness that the Emirates Stadium supporters gained from these purchases was somewhat tempered by the loss of Robin Van Persie and Alex Song.

Therefore a £15m move for could be considered as something of a ‘gamble’ given the relative paucity of big spending Arsene Wenger has presided over during his Arsenal tenure.

Adrian Lopez had an excellent first term at the Vicente Calderon, scoring 19 goals to help Atletico Madrid to a Europa League triumph. However the 24 year old has made less of an effective impact this season playing something of a bit-part player role and scoring just two goals, indeed the winner he struck against Celta Vigo on the weekend was his only La Liga goal thus far during this campaign.

Arsenal would do well to beef up their attack early next month as they look to make the most of a decent run of form that has taken the North London club back into the coveted top four.

A move for Adrian may well be deemed all the more worthwhile due to the fact that the former Deportivo La Coruna man being available for Champions League action.
