AC Milan are preparing a sensational swoop for Didier Drogba in January, with Alexandre Pato and Robinho both making way for the Ivorian.

Drogba is reportedly unhappy at current club Shanghai Shenhua and is looking to engineer a move back to Europe and the Champions League, with many of the continent’s top sides keen on his signature.

But according to Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport, AC Milan are leading the race for the former Chelsea striker, with top names Pato and Robinho both on their way out of the San Siro to help raise the funds for the Ivorian international.

Drogba is currently preparing for January’s Africa Cup of Nations and has been training with Chelsea since the Chinese season ended in November, but despite reports linking him with a return to Stamford Bridge, it seems that AC Milan are preparing a move.

This would be a slightly odd move.

AC Milan have been at pains to explain that decisions to allow Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva leave over the summer, and the probable departure of Robinho, were moves to both improve the club’s financial standing whilst looking to plan for the long term future of the club.

Therefore any move to sign a 34 year old striker would be something of a contradictory move.

However perhaps as a short term stop-gap it’s a move worth considering though the former Chelsea man is sure to demand a deal that lasts longer than just the remainder of the current campaign, not least as he would have to secure a deal to leave Shanghai Shenhua, which would entail the Ivory Coast international having to cancel a very expensive contract.

Drogba helped Chelsea to a Champions League triumph last term and may be keen to make a move to join a side that is still involved in the show-piece tournament.

AC Milan have seen youngster Stephan El Shaarawy ably replace Ibrahimovic this term but could well do with attacking support after a very shaky first half of their domestic season.
