Anfield side earmark moves for attacking duo.
Liverpool have been scouting a number of Ligue 1 talents in recent weeks and have earmarked potential moves for a pair of in-form players who Brendan Rodgers feels could add quality to the Anfield side’s attack.
With a view to improving the club’s striking options Liverpool have been monitoring Saint-Etienne forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has put in some excellent displays this term, netting eight goals thus far this term for Christophe Galtier’s side.
The 23 year old Gabon international rose to prominence as a teenager at AC Milan, joining the club’s youth team in January 2007. The French born striker failed to make the grade at the San Siro and was farmed out to a number of sides including Monaco and Lille before moving to Saint-Etienne where he has been a consistent performer.
Aubameyang netted 16 Ligue 1 goals last term and has continued to impress this season leading to a great deal of interest from across Europe.
Liverpool are desperately short of effective striking options and have fortunately seen Luis Suarez carry the goal-scoring burden with aplomb. However Rodgers knows that the Uruguayan needs support and with Fabio Borini suffering a foot injury after a shaky start to his career on Merseyside the Northern Irish manager is said to be interested in Aubameyang as a potential addition in the January transfer window.
Rodgers has also receiving glowing recommendations for Lille winger Dimitri Payet.
The 25 year old French international is one of Ligue 1’s top assist makers and a tricky wide-man who could well be seen as a player to help add further creativity to Liverpool’s attack. The former Saint-Etienne man was signed by Rudi Garcia 18 months ago and has grown into his role as the club’s chief provider following Eden Hazard’s move to Chelsea.
Payet has been a virtual ever present this term but despite his best efforts Lille have struggled for form and currently sit in mid-table and were knocked out of Champions League action at the group stage as Garcia continues to adjust his side’s expectations after seeing a string of talents leave the Stade Gerland over the past two years.
Liverpool have relied heavily to youth in wide attacking areas with both Raheem Sterling and Suso proving very capable but Rodgers is keen to avoid burning out his teenage talents and is therefore reportedly ready to mount a bid for Payet this month.
