White Hart Lane side set to snap up Schalke midfielder.
Tottenham are close to signing Schalke’s promising Germany international Lewis Holtby on a pre-contract deal.
The midfielder has insisted he will not sign a new deal with the Bundesliga outfit when his current terms expire in the summer.
Arsenal and Liverpool are among the English clubs monitoring developments but sources in Germany have suggested Spurs are poised to pounce.
Holtby is already on the fringes of the German national team and is regarded as the one who got away by the Football Association after being overlooked as a teenager.
Arsenal had looked a good bet to win the race to sign German international Holtby but it seems that Tottenham have now got the upper hand in the pursuit of the 22 year old.
Holtby, who’s father is English, has officially confirmed he will not look to renew his Schalke contract this summer and this will no doubt lead to a flurry of interest in the adaptable midfielder who would attract a great deal of interest even if there was a big fee hanging over his head.
It took a while for the youngster to force his way into the Veltins-Arena first team picture, spending time out on loan at Bochum and Mainz before he made an impact at the Gelsenkirchen basd side. Pretty soon Holtby had forced his way into Joachim Low’s national team set-up and is a player who could certainly make the grade in the Premier League.
Holtby has been a regular this season, making 25 appearances in all competitions before the German league went into it’s winter break. Though Schalke have fallen off the Bundesliga pace they did easily waltz into the last 16 of the Champions League, which may well explain the player’s willingness to see out the remainder of the season at the club. The recent sacking of Huub Stevens may well have hastened his decision to not put pen to paper on a new deal.
Though Andre Villas-Boas has a fair few midfield options the White Hart Lane boss seems undecided on Tom Huddlestone and may have concerns about Scott Parker given his recent return from injury. Jermaine Jenas has returned to the North London club from a loan spell at Nottingham Forest but doesn’t appear to have much in the way of a future at Spurs.
