David Cobeno could move to DW Stadium.
Goalkeeper David Cobeno could swap La Liga for the Premier League in the January transfer window with Wigan Athletic tracking the Rayo Vallecano stopper, according to Sky Sports.
Ali Al Habsi has the number one shirt at Wigan, but manager Roberto Martinez is said to be looking to increase competition and has earmarked 30-year-old goalkeeper Cobeno as the man he wants to add to his squad.
Cobeno was Rayo Vallecano’s regular goalkeeper last season but has not had been first choice between the posts this campaign – playing only eight time in La Liga. He has not been offered a new contract by Rayo Vallecano and is free to open talks with overseas clubs with Wigan closing in a January move.
Wigan have already been busy in the transfer window as Martinez attempts to bolster his ranks for the Premier League survival battle with the Latics currently sat in the relegation zone on goal difference.
He made a typical move to sign a talented South American player when snapping up Honduras international midfielder Roger Espinoza, who is equally comfortable in defence, from MLS side Sporting Kansas City. And Martinez has also agreed to sign striker Angelo Henriquez on loan from Manchester United for the remainder of the season.
