In form Real Betis midfielder Benat may well be a very good call as a potential replacement for veteran Frank Lampard. The Spanish international has garnered a great deal of attention over the past 18 months, during which the midfielder has helped his side to push up the table and this term mount a genuine push for a Champions League berth.
The 25 year old has 18 months to run on his current contract and has a €20m (£16.2m) clause that Roman Abramovich must meet in order to have any hope of snapping up the former Athletic Bilbao man.
Benat has been a chief assist maker for the Andalusian side, propelling them from mid-table to fifth spot an a genuine push for a Champions League berth. Real Betis boss Pepe Mel would be loathed to lose the in-form playmaker but appears resigned to the prospect of speculative interest leading to a concrete offer for the midfielder.
Lampard is out of contract in the summer and as yet no firm moves have been made by the Blues to offer the 34 year old a new deal, hence the potential need to bring in a fresh creative central midfield presence.
