Anfield and St Mary’s sides chase Cagliari defender.
Liverpool have made an offer of £7million for Italy international Davide Astori but are likely to miss out to Southampton.
The 25-year-old defender is valued at £12m by his club Cagliari and Southampton have offered £9.5m and hope to strike a deal, with the Saints in particular need of defensive reinforcements after conceding 37 goals in the first half of the Premier League season.

Whilst Southampton’s need may be greater one would have imagined that Cagliari defender Davide Astori would feel more of a pull to join Liverpool than to consider a move to the South Cost strugglers. Clearly in order for such a discussion to even be on the table the Anfield side would have to at least match the Saints opening bid for the experienced centre-back.
One time AC Milan man Astori is into his fifth season at Cagliari and his consistent displays for the relative minnows of Serie a have led to an international call-up and the sold defender may well feel that a high-profile move could well lead to further international recognition.
Liverpool may feel they need to bring in reinforcements at the back given Jamie Carragher’s age and Daniel Agger’s consistent injury concerns. Sebastian Coates is on hand to offer solid support and Martin Skrtel is certainly one of the first names on Brendan Rodgers’ team sheet.
Nigel Adkins side have conceded 38 goals in 21 Premier League matches this term, only two sides have let in more, and therefore it’s no surprise that the St Mary’s side could be looking to strengthen this back-line this term and seemingly are ready to outbid Liverpool for Astori.
