Emirates Stadium side joins race to land quality centre-back.
Arsenal are among a plethora of interested Premier League parties alerted by Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes’s decision to shelve contract talks with his Bundesliga side according to talkSPORT.
Manchester United and Liverpool are also rumoured to be interested in the 24 year old German international.
Schalke are said to be very keen to tie down the one club man to a new contract but having seen Lewis Holtby pursue a Veltins-Arena departure and Huub Stevens being axed as manager of the Gelsenkirchen side perhaps there is a chance that Howedes will look to leave for a new challenge.
Though Arsene Wenger has three solid centre-back options in Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen the Gunners boss may well feel that the chance to pursue Benedikt Howedes too good to ignore.
Despite the quality central defensive options Arsenal have in their armoury they have struggled at times, conceding six goals in their last three encounters and collecting just four clean sheets in their last 17 matches in all competitions.
Schalke are some way off the Bundesliga title pace, sitting in seventh place after a shaky first half of the campaign and if the club fail to secure a Champions League berth Howedes may be even more inclined to consider offers.
Howedes has won ten German caps and has racked up almost 200 appearances with Schalke since his debut in October 2007.
