St Etienne striker could be heading to St James’ Park
Newcastle United are keeping tabs on St Etienne’s Gabon international striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and could make a move for the target man if failing to sign Loic Remy from Marseille.
Remy remains Newcastle’s number one target to replace Demba Ba, who left to join Chelsea last week, but they may miss out on the French international with German Bundesliga sides Schalke and Borussia Dortmund joining the race for the signature of the £11million-rated hit-man.
And Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has earmarked the tall 23-year-old Aubameyang, who started out with AC Milan before having loan spells at Dijon, Lille and Monaco prior to signing for St Etienne, as his second choice signing.
Aubameyang, who has scored 28 times in 66 appearances for St Etienne in the last three seasons, would cost in the region of £6million.
“He is aware of Newcastle’s interest and likes the idea,” a source close to Aubameyang told the Newcastle Chronicle. “He was planning on staying at St Etienne until at least the end of the season. If there was a bid, though, he owes it to himself to listen.”
Pardew is keen to deals early in the January transfer window as he looks to save Newcastle’s season as they slip perilously close to the Premier League relegation zone.
