Stadium of Light boss Martin O’Neill had earmarked Cahill, who left Everton to join MLS side the New York Red Bills at the end of last season, to add some much needed experience and guile to the Sunderland midfield.
But the north-east club have abandoned their move, which would have been a short-term loan deal during the MLS off-season, following discussions with French under-21 international Alfred N’Diaye over a £2.5million move from Turkish side Bursaspor.

Midfield is an area O’Neill has targeted in the January transfer window with skipper Lee Cattermole sidelined until February with a knee injury and David Meyler having been allowed to join Hull City permanently in a £1.5million deal.
Cahill, who was also linked with a switch to QPR on loan, is now likely to stay in New York ahead of a pre-season return before the MLS season.
Sunderland, meanwhile, continue in their pursuit of Anderlecht’s Hungarian international defender Roland Juhasz, who could move for £2million. With John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Carlos Cueller and Danny Rose all defenders on the treatment table, his introduction would be a timely boost.
