Standard Liege star wanted by Premier League duo
Midfielder William Vainqueur is a £2.5million transfer target for Premier League rivals Southampton and Newcastle United.
The 24-year-old midfielder plays for Standard Liege in the Belgian top-flight but has fallen out of favour with coach Mircea Renic, according to reports in The Sun, and has been made available for transfer.
Vainqueur, capped once at under-21 level by France, began his career with Nantes in his home country, making 92 appearances for club and scoring once. He moved to Belgium to join Standard Liege at the start of the 2011/12 season but has been limited to only 23 appearances since.
He remains under contract at Standard Liege until the summer of 2016 having signed a five-year deal, but appears to have no long-term future at the club.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is looking to add fresh faces to his squad in a bid to halt the slide towards the Premier League relegation zone and Vainqueur fits the club’s transfer policy of buying talented but cheap players from the continent.
The absence of captain Adam Lallana from the Southampton squad due to injury has prompted manager Nigel Adkins to search the European market for midfield options as he looks to keep the Saints in the Premier League.
