Old Trafford and Allianz Arena sides keen on Goodison Park defender.
According to the Daily Star Man United & Bayern Munich will battle each other in the race to sign Everton left-back Leighton Baines.
This source believes that the set-piece specialist is being lined up as an ideal successor to Frenchman Patrice Evra and states that the only reason Sir Alex Ferguson couldn’t lure the England man to Old Trafford in the summer was due to having run out of money having opted instead to spend £24m to sign Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie, a decision that has clearly worked in Man United’s favour.
Baines he will have two years left on his contract at the end of this season and as such Everton can command a fairly high fee for the 28 year old who is also a player high up on Jupp Heynckes’s Allianz Arena wish-list.
Bayern Munich currently use young Austrian talent David Alaba as their first choice left-back but may feel that Baines is a more complete performer and could offer the Bavarian club an improvement in the position.
One imagines that the chances of tempting the former Wigan Athletic man will significantly increase if the Toffees fail to secure a Champions League berth. Thus far this term Everton have been there or thereabout and are mounting a genuine challenge for a top four spot but David Moyes will fear he could lose the defender if their challenge runs out of steam.
