But Aston Villa have entered the race to sign Boateng late as manager Paul Lambert looks to capture a holding midfielder in the January transfer window as he looks to give his struggling defence some protection.
Boateng, who spent most of career playing in Greece before spells in Germany and Spain, has been with Dnipro since June 2011 but has been told he can leave Ukraine during the transfer window.
Former Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker had been linked with a return to the club after agreeing to cancel his contract with Championship side Ipswich Town, but Lambert is not interested in signing the 28-year-old.
Lambert has admitted he wants a new holding midfielder to protect his leaky defence and has turned down a return to Villa for free-agent Nigel Reo-Coker.
