Liverpool Defender Transfer Denied

Anfield centre-back Sebastian Coates not wanted by Brazilian side.

Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates will not be offered a route out of his Anfield hell by Gremio after the Brazilian side ruled out a move.

Gremio were on Sunday reported to have bid £7million to take Uruguayan international centre-back Coates, who has played only five times in the Premier League since joining from Nacional in August 2011, back to South America where he first began his career.

But Coates, who has been told he can leave Liverpool and who played in the club’s FA Cup defeat at Oldham on Sunday, will not be joining Gremio after the Brazilian side insisted they are not interested in doing a deal.

Gremio director Rui Costa told UOL: “You can forget that, just forget it.”

The 22-year-old was expected to make a major impression after joining Liverpool, but he has failed to dislodge number one pairing Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger and has also spent much of his time behind Jamie Carragher in the central defensive pecking order.
