Austrian international Scharner was a hero of the Wigan fans during a four-year spell at the club before leaving to join West Brom. After two seasons at The Hawthorns, he left at the end of last season and opted for a switch to the Bundesliga in the summer.

He has found opportunities hard to come by at Hamburg and was keen to return to the Premier League with Scharner thought to be wanted by both Sunderland and Wigan.

The 32-year-old jumped at the chance to return to Wigan with manager Roberto Martinez likely to employ the midfielder at the heart of defence to ease an injury crisis which has included Ivan Ramis being ruled out for the season.

“It really is fantastic to be back,” Scharner told the BBC. “Wigan will always have a big place in my heart, so to be asked to come back and help the team now is something really special for me.”

Martinez added: “There is no better centre-half for us to bring in than Paul Scharner. He knows the football club, we know him well, he has incredible experience and is a meticulous professional which means he is always in a great physical condition.

“He is desperate to come in and help the team and fight for his position. For us, it couldn’t be a better option.”
