Celtic defender Efe Ambrose is flattered by interest in him from Liverpool, but he does expect to make a move to the Premier League.

Nigerian international Ambrose is the subject of interest from Liverpool, Sunderland and Swansea City after catching the eye in his half-a-season at Celtic Park.

And the recent African Cup of Nations winner told the Scotsman: “I am happy to be linked with a club like Liverpool. My dream is to play across the border. The English league is the best but I am happy at Celtic.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon only signed Ambrose in the summer when paying Israeli side Ashdod £1.5 million for the 24-year-old, who signed a three-year deal at Celtic Park. But he admits the defender could leave the club in the summer, when Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Fraser Forster could all be poached by Premier League clubs.

Sunderland are understood to be preparing a £6million summer bid for Ambrose with a central defender at the top of Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill’s summer shopping list.

Sunderland are expected to allow Titus Bramble, who has forced his way back into the first-team picture over the last month or so, and Matt Kilgallon leave the Stadium of Light in the summer when their contracts expire.

But Liverpool are in equal need of defensive reinforcements with Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of the season and Sebastian Coates set to be offloaded after failing to make the grade since his move to Anfield a year-and-a-half ago.

Swansea City defender Ashley Williams is also on the list of possible signings for Liverpool with manager Brendan Rodgers thought to be keen on linking up with his former player again.
