Mancini is under increasing pressure after a disappointing season in defence of City’s Premier League title with several names – including Jose Mourinho, Manuel Pellegrini, David Moyes and Michael Laudrup – linked with replacing him in the summer.

But Italian international Balotelli, who left City in January after two-and-a-half years at the club when signing for AC Milan in a £17million deal, has leapt to the defence of his former boss and claimed that Mancini is the right man to lead Manchester City into the future.

“There is nobody better for City,” Balotelli told The Sun. “Most importantly, the players like him. If you asked who they want next season, every single player would say Roberto. He’s not just their coach but also their friend.
“Look at the success Roberto has had – the FA Cup and a first championship in over 40 years. Even Alex Ferguson does not win a trophy every year, but he always comes back.”

Mancini buckled under the pressure of questioning on Friday when swearing in a live press conference when asked about his future. But he remained confident that he will be in charge at the Etihad Stadium at the start of next season.

Balotelli had a love-hate relationship with Mancini during his time at Manchester City, the training ground bust-up between the pair bringing an end to his career in the Premier League.
