Manchester City are set to make a move to sign forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona in the summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 24-year-old Chilean international Sanchez has failed to live up to expectations at the Nou Camp this season in a Barcelona side that has dominated the La Liga title race and could well be sold on in the summer.

Manchester United had been credited with interest in the former Udinese forward, but it is their Premier League rivals who look set to make the first move with manager Roberto Mancini believing Sanchez would help City’s problems in wide areas.

City have struggled for creativity from the flanks this year following the sale of Adam Johnson to Sunderland and Scott Sinclair’s failure to hold down a first-team berth following his move from Swansea City last summer. Without natural width, City have been predictable at times this season and Mancini is to make rectifying that a priority.

Sanchez would certainly offer natural width and fit into the 4-3-3 formation which the club have used to good effect.

Mancini tried to sign him in 2011 from Udinese only to lose out to Barcelona, and last summer saw another transfer target go begging when Eden Hazard opted to join Chelsea rather than move to City from French side Lille.
