Seven Players Manchester United Should Sell This Summer

A collection of players Sir Alex Ferguson can afford to usher out the Old Trafford exit.

7. Fabio

Throughout his Manchester United career, which began as an 18-year-old in 2008, Fabio has been in shadow of his twin brother Rafael da Silva.

With his brother the first choice right-back, Fabio was forced to play in an unnatural left-back role during his formative years in the United first-team and as a result he never managed to gain a regular berth.

The Brazilian international has found first-team opportunities hard to come by on loan at Premier League strugglers Queens Park Rangers this season too and there seems little chance of him making the grade at Manchester United so the only solution is to sell him this summer and let the identical twins go their own separate way.

6. Bebe

Manchester United paid £7.6million to Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes to sign 20-year-old prodigy Bebe in 2010 but to date his seven appearances for the club have come at a price of more than £1million each.

The striker may only be 22 still, but with Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez ahead of him in the pecking order it seems unlikely he will ever become a Premier League hit.

Loan spells at Besiktas last season and to Rio Ave this season have not resulted in Bebe fulfilling his undoubted potential and United should make him available for a permanent move away from Old Trafford at the end of the season.

5. Federico Macheda

Federico Macheda secured a move away from Old Trafford in the January transfer window when agreeing to join Bundesliga side Stuttgart on loan for the remainder of the season. That could now become a permanent move in the summer.

Like Bebe, Macheda has struggled for first-team opportunities over the last couple of seasons and has been farmed out on loan. It is now time for Italian under-21 international to begin a new phase of his career that had promised so much.

Macheda shot to prominence as a 17-year-old when scoring a late winner on his Manchester United debut but he never managed to build on that dramatic start to his professional career and it has been stop-start ever since.

4. Anders Lindegaard

It would appear that Anders Lindegaard’s hopes of becoming number one at Manchester United are destined for failure after he failed to dislodge David De Gea this season.

It had looked at one point that the Danish international might well become the first choice of Sir Alex Ferguson, but the former Aalesunds stopper only managed a period of sharing the number one shirt with De Gea.

The fact United have been linked with a number of goalkeepers for summer moves, including Victor Valdes, Pepe Reina, Asmir Begovic and Simon Mignolet, suggests that Lindegaard’s days might be numbered the Old Trafford club should consider selling him.

3. Anderson

Now in his sixth season at Old Trafford, Brazilian international midfielder Anderson is a popular player with the Manchester United faithful.

But the emergence of fellow midfielder Tom Cleverley over the last two seasons, coupled with injury problems for Anderson himself, has limited the 24-year-old’s time on the pitch for Manchester United.

He is contracted to the club until the summer of 2015, but it could well be the right time to cash in on Anderson this summer. He could well be used as part of a deal to get Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United, but should leave one way or another.

2. Ashley Young

England international Ashley Young enjoyed a fine first season at Manchester United last year, although it ultimately didn’t end with a Premier League winners medal.

This year, a series of injuries and a change in formation at times following the arrival of Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa in the summer have combined to limit Young to just 18 appearances all season and just one of those in the Champions League. Significantly, he has not found the net all season.

The capture of Wilfried Zaha in the January transfer window could be bad news for Young with the Crystal Palace winger officially joining in the summer. It should be a revolving door with the arrival of Zaha spelling an end to Young’s time at Old Trafford, during which his theatrics and diving have caused as many headlines as his performances.

1. Nani

With Nani’s contract situation rumbling on, it is growing increasingly likely that his career at Manchester United could be coming to an end this summer. He has made just 16 appearances this season and has been unhappy with his amount of game time.

The Portuguese winger has yet to agree new terms with the Old Trafford club and will have just one year left on his contract at the end of the season, leaving United with little choice but to cash in on him.

Nani has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and that could well happen in a summer of rebuilding at the Bernabeu. He could yet be used as a makeweight in a deal that sees Cristiano Ronaldo return to United.
