Anfield club set to make summer approach for Peruvian international.
Liverpool are set to make a summer bid for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Carlos Zambrano according to The Daily Mail.
Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to strengthen his defence and has identified the Peruvian player as one of his top summer targets.
The 23-year old normally prefers a right-back spot but with current first-choice full-back Glen Johnson unlikely to be displaced, Zambrano may find himself also appearing in defensive midfield.
Eintracht Frankfurt value the player around £7 million but it is thought Liverpool will hope to secure a deal closer to the £4.5 million mark.
One of the Bundesliga club’s directors, Bruno Hubner, admitted there had been interest in the player saying, ‘There is interest from Liverpool in Carlos Zambrano. They have asked about him, but there has not been an offer yet.’
Liverpool are keen to secure the signing of some defensive reinforcements, with club legend Jamie Carragher set to retire at the end of the season.
Pugnacious defender Martin Skrtel has also been linked with a move away from the club, and Liverpool would suddenly find themselves short of options at the back were the Slovakian defender to leave.
Frankfurt are set to make a good profit on the player having signed him for less than £1 million just last summer.
