The London club are set to appoint a new manager during the summer after a disappointing spell under interim manager Rafa Benitez.
The Spanish boss has suffered a fractured relationship with the Chelsea faithful who have never forgiven him for the negative comments he made about the club during his spell as Liverpool manager.
Roman Abramovich is keen for Benitez’s successor to get off to a better start with the club’s supporters and that could pave the way for a return to the Premier League for Hiddink.
The Dutch gaffer enjoys a good relationship with the Chelsea fans after guiding them to FA Cup glory during his brief spell in charge in 2009.
Hiddink is currently in charge of wealthy Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala but has failed to agree a new deal with the club as he enters the last few months of his contract.
The manager spoke warmly of his time in the Premier League saying, ‘I enjoyed very much playing here and overall in the Premier League.
‘It’s what every player likes to do and also the managers and coaches. They like to work in the big leagues.
‘I don’t know about my future, because I”m not the youngest any more, though I still feel very energetic and I love to be on the pitch almost every day with the guys.
‘There’s energy left but I can never predict my future because a big part of my future is already behind me.’
