The top two teams in the Premier League lock horns this evening as Manchester United entertain rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford and with the former a massive 15 points clear coming into this one, they know a win could see them just one victory away from winning the title.
Not only that, they have the chance to do the double over City and make amends for the 6-1 defeat in this fixture last season. This is the first time they have met at Old Trafford since that encounter in October 2011 and many United fans are sure to have it in their minds ahead of this one.
In a way, both managers can use the 6-1 to their advantage as well as Sir Alex Ferguson will remind his men of how that defeat felt and tell them to go and inflict the same pain on City, whereas Roberto Mancini can tell his players that they have shown they’re good enough to hand out thrashings to the Red Devils.
As ever, Old Trafford is sure to be rocking for this clash and both sets of fans are going to make a lot of noise here. They met in April last season at the Etihad Stadium on a Monday evening and City won that clash 1-0, which sent them to the top of the table.
Although this game doesn’t quite have the same significance, each side is going to be desperate for the win here. There was a time when City were a long, long way behind United and even though they aren’t going to get near them this season, you sense the rivalry between these two Manchester clubs is as big as it has ever been.
With three red cards in the last six meetings between these two, it shows you that this is usually a fiercely contested battle and that emotions are often running high.
Wayne Rooney is a man that has a good record in this fixture as he has four goals in the last three Manchester derbies. He is being offered at 7/1 to score the first goal here, something he has done the last two times he has found the net this one.
For City, Carlos Tevez might prove to be the key man as he is sure to be up for this clash on his old stomping ground. He can expect a hostile reception from the home supporters, but that might spur the Argentine on and he is at 8/1 to score first.
Both captains – Nemanja Vidic and Vincent Kompany – have to put in big performances here and make sure they organise the back four, whereas in midfield, whichever one of Michael Carrick or Yaya Toure can get on the ball the most might have a big say in where the points go.
United and City are both in good form, but the former are unsurprisingly the 13/10 favourites to take the spoils, with the latter out at 5/2.
It isn’t the game that many thought it would be at this stage of the season as Ferguson’s side are so far ahead of Mancini’s men, but it should be a cracker from 8pm.
