Centre back could be set for move to Anfield.
Liverpool have leapt ahead in the race to sign Swansea’s Ashley Williams according to The Mirror.
The defender has been in fine form this season for the South Wales club and has been attracting the interest of a number of Premier League sides.
Arsenal were thought to be tracking Williams in preparation of a summer bid as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his backline over the summer.
The French boss has become increasingly frustrated with his erratic defenders and hoped that Williams could provide some leadership in his back four.
But it now appears that Liverpool have stolen a march on their rivals and are in pole position to land the player’s signature after it was revealed that Williams is a Liverpool fan.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers knows Williams well after his previous spell managing at the Liberty Stadium and it seems the Anfield manager is ready to grant the centre back’s wish of a move to a big club.
Rodgers needs defensive reinforcements as he prepares for life without the retiring Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel’s future at the club looking increasingly uncertain.
It is thought that Liverpool will have to at least match the £9 million offered by Arsenal in the January transfer window.
