Top Ten Games Of The Premier League Season So Far

There’s still plenty of Premier League action to come this season but we look back at the top ten games so far..

10. Chelsea 0-1 QPR

There are no easy games when you’re bottom of the league and coming up against one of the division’s juggernauts is always a difficult order. New boss, Harry Redknapp knew he had a tough task against Chelsea, the two had become fierce rivals thanks to recent events between the two and he needed to act fast.

Nobody expected Rangers to get anything out of this game, so when ex-Chelsea wide man Shaun Wright-Phillips popped up on 78 minutes to give his new side the spoils, a major upset was on the cards.

QPR held on to seal their first win at Stamford Bridge since 1979, which was also their first away win in the league since November 2011.

9. Arsenal 3-3 Fulham

Keep calm and pass Berba the ball was very much the message of the day for this encounter, as the mercurial Bulgarian led a Fulham come back after going 2-0 down.

Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski put the Gunners ahead after just 25 minutes but Berbatov halved the deficit six minutes later before Alex Kacanikilic restored parity with just five minutes of the first half remaining.

A Berbatov penalty put the West London club ahead midway through the second half but that lead lasted just two minutes as Giroud levelled things up once again.

A last minute penalty miss from Mikel Arteta ensured a rotten afternoon for Arsenal fans but a thrilling encounter for the neutral.8. Aston Villa 3-2 QPR

Sometimes there’s nothing quite like a relegation dog fight. QPR may be virtually dead and buried now but at the time these two met there was all to play for.

And the visitors took an early lead, Jermaine Jenas pouncing on a mistake in the Villa midfield but Gabby Agbonlahor was on hand to rescue Villa, nodding them level on the stroke of half time.

Rangers came out strong and hit the woodwork, only to watch Andreas Weimann storm up the other end and put Villa ahead. The game’s ebb and flow was becoming apparent, both teams smelt blood and felt there was something in this game for both of them and the spoils were almost shared when an Andros Townsend wonderstrike somehow found its way past Brad Guzan.

However, there was one more twist in the tale, with seven minutes to go as Andi Weimann raced through the QPR area to pull the ball back to an unmarked Christian Benteke who slotted home his 13th goal of the season.7. Manchester United 4-3 Newcastle United

Johnny Evans ended up scoring at both ends during this breathless encounter that saw the Manchester side snatch all three points in the dying moments (and not for the first time either).

James Perch game the Magpies a surprise lead after just 4 minutes but Jonny Evans managed to level things up midway through the first half.

However, just three minutes later Evans went from hero to Villain as he put through his own net.

Patrice Evra cancelled out the gaffe shortly after the restart though that didn’t last long either with Papiss Cisse giving Newcastle the lead once again. Robin Van Persie equalised just three minutes later making sure that the fans couldn’t relax and in virtually the last kick of the game Chicharito popped up to keep all three points in Manchester.6. Norwich City 3-4 Manchester City

This game appeared to be all over after just five minutes as Edin Dzeko put the champions ahead with a quick-fire brace. Anthony Pilkington’s free kick after 15 minutes gave the Canaries hope, which was extended as Samir Nasri saw red for City after an ugly clash with Sebastien Bassong.

Sergio Aguero doubled City’s lead shortly after the restart but a Russell Martin double either side of a Mark Bunn own goal couldn’t earn Chris Hughton’s men to a share of the points but fans could take heart at the courageous fightback.5. Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle United

A Theo Walcott hat-trick was the stand-out contribution in this ten goal affair, as the forward made a compelling case for a new contact and a central striking position.

The two sides traded blows in an attempt to overtake each other before the England man settled matters late on.

Besides Walcot, Olivier Giroud and Demba Ba both contributed with respective braces whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lukas Podolski Sylvan Marveaux all chipped in with goals of their own. Classic stuff!4. Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool

Considered as the game that effectively ended City’s title challenge, the same saw controversy strike in what was a thrilling encounter.

Edin Dzeko game the home side the lead on 23 minutes but Liverpool equalised six minutes later under dubious circumstances.

As City appealed a foul on the Bosnian hitman they waited for Liverpool to put the ball out of play as their player lay prone on the ground. The Reds had different ideas, however, and as there was no whistle Daniel Sturridge completed the move and scoed against his former club.

Steven Gerrard gave the visitors the advantage with yet another long range effort but Sergio Aguero made sure that honours were even with ten minutes to go, with a stunning angled finish. Wow!
3. Reading 2-2 Chelsea

Many cold be forgiven for believing this to be a forgone conclusion before a ball had even been kicked, but Reading managed to climb out of the bottom three with a dramatic late fight back.

Chelsea were coasting thanks to a Juan Mata strike right on half time and Frank Lampard doubled the visitors advantage midway through the second half.

Shortly after the second goal, Adam Le Fondre was introduced and before they knew it the score was halved with three minutes left on the clock.

Surely Reading could pull it level? Well, they did! That man Le Fondre again managed to keep his composure once the ball had miraculously found him in front of Ross Turnbull.2. Aston Villa 2-3 Manchester United

It’s a common consensus amongst Villa fans that the club never gets much joy out of Manchester United, so they must have been delirious when two Andi Weimann goals either side of the break put them in dreamland.

Villa were controlling proceedings all over the pitch and United were becoming more and more frustrated.

That is until the introduction of Javier Hernandez. The diminutive Mexican virtually won the game single handedly by bagging two late goals and playing a major part in the Ron Vlaar own goal that kept Villa down near the bottom and United at the top of the table.1. Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United

Last minute winners seem to be a running theme with Manchester United, but it is perhaps this one that mattered most.

At the time it was a vital victory for The Reds as they sat just three points ahead of their neighbours and with the season still taking shape it was vital to get a jump on the champions at any given opportunity.

Two first half goals from Wayne Rooney stood United in good stead but City managed to half the deficit on the hour mark thanks to Yaya Toure.

City looked to have rescued a point with just four minutes remaining as Pablo Zabaleta drilled home from close range.

However, ‘Cometh the man, cometh the hour,’ the old saying goes and RVP struck home with a cruelly deflected free kick to send United six points clear at the top.

The game is probably best remembered now for the ugly scenes at the end of the game. A member of the crowd struck Rio Ferdinand with a coin and Joe Hart had to accost pitch invaders trying to get at the England defender.
