The Best Man United XI of the Sir Alex Ferguson Reign

To mark the Scottish manager collecting yet another Premier League title, here is our best XI comprised of talents who have represented the Old Trafford side during his time in charge.

Peter Schmeichel

Dane gets in with very little competition, Edwin van der Sar apart, and is player who galvanized his defence expertly and rarely made a mistake during his eighth seasons at the club.

Denis Irwin

One of the most consistent, understated, and able performers to have ever pulled on a United shirt. Made over 500 appearances for Man United and is the left-back in our XI.

Jaap Stam

A player who Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted is one he wishes he had not offloaded, the Dutch man mountain is the best centre-back Man United have had during the Scot’s time in charge.

Rio Ferdinand

34 year old defender has played his way into this eleven after 11 seasons of sterling service. Is still an important member of Ferguson’s squad and may well be set for a contract extension despite his advancing years.

Gary Neville

The Sky analyst always put in a 100% committed performance during his 19 season run in the Man United first team. Racked up over 600 appearances for the club, one of Fergie’s original ‘Fledglings’.

Ryan Giggs

There was no way the Welsh wing wizard wasn’t going to make this eleven. Perhaps the best player of the Premier League era, an inspiring performer who hasn’t taken his foot off the pedal in an amazing 23 seasons in the Old Trafford first team.

Paul Scholes

Less of an attacking threat than in his pomp the intelligent midfielder was brought out of retirement to help get Man United’s Premier League title back. May have struggled with his tackling over the years but there is no doubting the importance of the box to box performer over the years.

Roy Keane

Tough tackling Irishman takes pride of place in the centre of our XI’s midfield. Well renowned for his uncompromising combative fighting spirit but also had the ability to score quality crucial goals when needed. A real leader.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Sir Alex Ferguson would not want to have seen the Portuguese attacker leave in 2009 but did at least receive a world record £80m when he did depart. The goal-scoring wide-man made a real impact in his six seasons at the club and we have him in a floating role out on the right in our XI.

Eric Cantona

Mercurial Frenchman will play in the hole behind our striker and deserves the spot for helping to get Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man United side on course. The superbly talented attacker was perhaps the catalyst for success that came after Ferguson’s fairly shaky first few years in charge of the club.

Wayne Rooney

There has been a lot of speculation about the 27 year old’s Man United future but he finds his spot in our Fergie ‘Dream Team’ with ease. Though Rooney has more recently been used in a more withdrawn role we have elected to play the former Everton man in a striking role and given that he is the club’s fourth highest goal-scorer of all time this seems the right position to play the England man in.
