Emirates Stadium side close in on much needed defensive midfielder.
Arsenal have reportedly begun talks with Lyon ahead of a move for £15m midfielder Maxime Gonalons according to the Metro.
The Gunners are known to be long term admirers of the battling midfielder and have scouted him a number of times over the past year.
Arsene Wenger is keen to add some steel to his midfield to add balance to a side that is strong on creativity but lacks bite, Gonalons may be the ideal man to help provide protection for the likes of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mikel Arteta.
Lyon have been suffering financially for some years now and are still in a position where their top talents are being picked up in order to balance the books as evidenced by the summer sales of Hugo Lloris and Kim Kallstrom this summer and Michel Bastos is likely to secure a permanent switch to Schalke having impressed during a loan spell at the Bundesliga side.
Lyon are said to be after £15m for Gonalons and that may be a price Wenger is willing to pay as he looks to bring in a replacement for Alex Song, who left for Barcelona last summer.
Abou Diaby has once again suffered with injuries and Wenger seems keen to fill the void.
24 year old defensive midfielder Gonalons has represented Lyon since the age of ten but may not be ready to leave the Stade Gerland, knowing that a high profile move could assist his chance of further international recognition.
Gonalons has won six French national team caps since his debut in November 2011.
