Stoke chief executive denies that Liverpool have signed Begovic.
Stoke City chief executive Tony Scholes has dismissed rumours of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic joining Liverpool as a ‘complete fabrication’, according to Click Liverpool.
The Bosnian shot-stopper has been in fine form for the Potters this season despite their battle with relegation, and has emerged as a target for a number of top clubs.
Arsenal were believed to be in the driving seat to sign him, before rumours of a switch to Liverpool being completed surfaced in the Bosnian media yesterday.
However, Scholes says no deal has been done, and that Begovic never even spoke to the journalist who published the story.
“Asmir’s agent rang me as soon as these stories surfaced,” he said. “He assures me that Asmir doesn’t know the Bosnian journalist and has certainly never spoken to him.
“It’s complete fabrication and unfortunately it has been picked up by a paper in this country.”
Rumours of Begovic’s departure also increased when Stoke completed the signing of young goalkeeper Jack Butland from Birmingham City in January. The talented ‘keeper will join up with the squad this summer and may be being groomed for the number one role if Begovic leaves.
Both Arsenal and Liverpool are on the lookout for new goalkeepers this summer, as they have lost patience with current number ones Wojciech Szczesny and Pepe Reina.
