Everton have chosen former defender David Weir as the man to take over from David Moyes should their first choice target, Roberto Martinez, decide to go elsewhere, according to the Daily Mail.

The former Wigan man confirmed that he would be leaving the club following relegation to the Championship and he is currently the bookie’s favourite to take over on Merseyside, though Spanish side Malaga are also said to be interested.

Everton are yet to make a formal approach for the 39-year-old, who is still on holiday in Spain weighing up his options.

However, should he decide not to take over from David Moyes, the Toffees will turn to their former defender David Weir as the man to continue Moyes’ good work.

The 42-year-old Scot spent eight years in Everton’s back line between 1999-207 and he is now on the coaching staff at Goodison Park.

Weir has been named at the head of a trio comprised on Alan Stubbs and Phil Neville. Outgoing Everton manager Moyes, who rates Weir highly, has said publicly he thinks the right man to fill his shoes should be someone with the ‘steel’ associated with the club.
