With the imminent departure of wonderkid Neymar to Barcelona, Brazilian side Santos aim to bolster their striking options by bringing back one of their own – former striker Robinho.

The AC Milan forward, who left Santos in 2005 to replace the legendary Luis Figo in the Real Madrid No.10 shirt, has reportedly been suffering from homesickness, and would very much like to return to the club with which he began his career.

Robinho had returned to Santos on a short loan in 2010 after falling out of favour while playing at Manchester City, before signing to Italian giants Milan, but the 29-year-old now appears to want to return to his homeland for good.

As Robinho, who has won 90 international caps for Brazil, is out of contract in 2014, it would be in the Rossoneri’s interest to sell the player in the forthcoming transfer window, rather than to allow him to leave on a free next summer.

This is an opportunity Santos feel is too good to miss, as Robinho has already proven his worth for the Brazilian side, having helped them to two Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles, as well as their first ever Copa do Brasil.

“As soon as the transfer market opens, we will step forward for Robinho,” Santos Vice-President Odilio Rodrigues was quoted as saying by Football Italia.

“Of course Neymar is irreplaceable for everything he represents, but with the departure of our star, the efforts to create a winning side become even more pressing.

“Therefore, we are interested in Robinho.”
