Manchester City could join the race for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, as it has emerged they are searching for a big name signing in midfield.

Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini is expected to take over at the Etihad Stadium next season, after revealing he has a ‘verbal agreement’ with the club, and the wheels are already in place to bring in a number of the Chilean’s targets in the transfer window.

A midfield playmaker is said to be high on the agenda, with Pellegrini keen to make up for a lack of creativity in the team under Roberto Mancini last season due to the fatigue of star player David Silva.

Statistics show that City’s strikers had high conversion rates, but the team’s lack of goals in a disappointing season suggests the team weren’t creating enough scoring chances for their frontmen. After playing so many games for club and country for the last few years, Silva was not at his best and a player like Modric would take the workload off the Spaniard to provide most of the team’s assists.

The Croatian was one of the Premier League’s best midfielders in his Tottenham days, prompting Real Madrid to sign him last summer for £33million. However, he has not been given many opportunities to impress at the Bernabeu, and this has seen him linked with several clubs keen to bring him back to England.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with him in the last few days, as departing Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on taking the 27-year-old with him to Stamford Bridge, and United boss David Moyes is on the lookout for a new playmaker himself following the retirement of Paul Scholes.

Modric is also attracting attention from AC Milan, but it is thought that City will now step up their interest as Pellegrini has identified him as one of several players he hopes to raid from his old club.

The 59-year-old has also expressed interest in Argentine winger Angel Di Maria, as well as Gonzalo Higuain if City miss out on their main striker target Edinson Cavani. Both these players are said to be available this summer as the Bernabeu club seek to reshape their squad for next season, and Modric could be as well after being seen by many as a disappointing signing last season.

City will be keen to beat their rivals to a player who has shown himself very capable in the Premier League, and may also look at competing with Manchester United and Arsenal to bring Barcelona playmaker Cesc Fabregas back to English football if a move for Modric fails, as it was reported earlier today.
