Real Madrid assistant manager Aitor Karanka believes Jose Mourinho has already sealed his return to former club Chelsea, according to the Metro.

The Portuguese coach has been at Real Madrid for three years, but his departure from the Bernabeu was confirmed by club president Fiorentino Perez earlier this month after a difficult season in which the Spanish giants finished trophyless.

The 50-year-old was previously at Chelsea between 2004 and 2007, and will delight fans at Stamford Bridge with his return to the club as replacement for interim manager Rafael Benitez.

Karanka spoke about Mourinho’s return as he was approached to join as his assistant with the Blues.

“Mourinho has joined Chelsea,” he said. “He offered me the chance to go with him but Real Madrid hasn’t told me I’ll be released.

“I’ve still got three years left on my contract and I’d have to pay them to leave.”

Mourinho first brought Karanka to Real Madrid as his assistant when he joined in 2010, but the Spaniard will seemingly remain at the club to work under whoever is appointed next, with PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti said to be Perez’s first choice.

Bayern Munich’s Juup Heynckes and Mourinho’s former assistant Andre Villas-Boas, now Tottenham manager, have also both been linked with the Bernabeu hot seat.
