Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly set his sights on young German international Lars Bender as he sets about bringing in central midfielder this summer.

The Daily Mail believes that the 24 year old Bayer Leverkusen star is high up on Wenger’s list of transfer priorities.

Arguably a move for Bender is infinitely more likely to succeed that speculation linking the North London club with attempts to re-sign Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas.

Bender has been a model of consistency over the course of his four seasons in the Bayer Leverkusen first team set-up and the box to box performer was a key member of Sami Hyypia’s side who secured a top three finish in the Bundesliga in 2012/13.

In many ways the German is a very similar type of player to Fabregas, comfortable on the ball, a tireless runner and a player who isn’t afraid to get forward.

Now a regular in Joachim Low’s national team set-up Lars Bender may feel that a high profile move to Arsenal could aid his push for a prominent role in the 2014 World Cup finals.

It may well assist in Wenger’s push for the £15m rated rangy midfielder that his squad includes two of his national team colleagues, namely Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski.
