Liverpool look set to miss out on Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tiago Ilori, with the youngster seemingly favouring a move to La Liga with Valencia, according to the Daily Mirror.

Brendan Rodgers has been an admirer of the 20-year-old for some time, and has made him one his main targets to strengthen his defesive options this summer.

Although still not a regular in the Portuguese side’s starting eleven, Ilori is widely regarded as an exciting prospect in the game, and Liverpool have seen a £3.5million for him rejected.

Valencia will now make their move and will be favourites to land him this summer, as they look to prepare for a possible summer exit of one of their key defenders, Adil Rami.

Rami has emerged as a target for Premier League trio Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City, and Valencia do not hold out much hope of keeping the Frenchman, who is keen to move to a bigger club before next summer’s World Cup.

Liverpool will now turn their attention to Swansea’s Ashley Williams, as Rodgers still aims to add one more defender to a back four that will be preparing for life after Jamie Carragher’s retirement at the end of this season.

Kolo Toure has already been brought to Anfield on a free transfer from Manchester City.
