Ivan Gazidis confident in Rooney pursuit.
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has given Arsene Wenger the go-ahead to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United, according to the Sun.
The England striker has emerged as a surprise target for the Gunners following rumours his handing in a transfer request at Old Trafford, which has also seen him linked with the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSG.
Arsenal have been unable to compete with the financial power of these clubs in recent years, often signing lesser-known young players and developing them over time instead of bringing in big names that are already at their peak.
However, Gazidis feels the Gunners’ financial situation is improving, and admitted he does not now see a player like Rooney as out of their reach.
Asked about whether Arsenal could afford Rooney, Gazidis said: “I don’t know what his fee would be.
“I’m talking about an extra £70m of additional, high-margin revenue — so of course we could do that. We could do more than that.”
The news comes on the same day that Arsenal are reported to have made a big-money offer for Everton star Marouane Fellaini, which all suggests that it could be an interesting summer at the Emirates Stadium.
Wenger has been linked with several other big-name targets, and could finally be set to launch an assault on the Premier League title by building an improved team.
