Napoli to compete with Liverpool for Real Madrid striker.
New Napoli manager Rafael Benitez is hoping to beat his old club Liverpool to the signing of Jose Callejon from Real Madrid, according to talkSPORT.
The Italian side are keen to strengthen for next season as they prepare for Champions League football and the likely departure of star striker Edinson Cavani, who has become one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
Benitez, who has just taken over at the club after a short spell at Chelsea, has been looking at a number of attacking options, and wants to try his luck with an £8million bid to Real for Callejon, who has been something of a squad player at the Bernabeu this season.
The Spanish giants may be willing to sell the 26-year-old, as they look to rebuild their team to mount a better title challenge against rivals Barcelona next season.
They are prepared to sell a number of squad players to help raise the funds for big-money moves for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez. The prospect of the Reds losing Suarez has led to their interest in Callejon in a possible swap deal.
However, they could miss out on the Spaniard as Benitez looks to make an immediate impact at his new club with some attacking additions.
The former Valencia and Inter Milan boss has also been linked with the likes of Fernando Torres, Edin Dzeko and Javier Mascherano.
