Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has backed manager Arsene Wenger to perform in the transfer market this summer by insisting that he is not afraid to spend big on the right player, Sky Sports reports.

Wenger has come in for criticism over his dealings in the transfer market lately by being accused of not keeping up with the club’s rivals when it comes to recruitment.

However, he will be given significant backing in the market again this summer but Gazidis believes in the philosophy of quality over quantity and just because the funds are there doesn’t mean they will all be spent.

“Arsene is not scared to spend money but he has to believe they are top-class players who will add to the squad,” he said.

“Can I guarantee he will spend all of the money available to him? That depends on the talent.

“Arsene has done an outstanding job to make sure Arsenal stay in the mix with the top teams – not where we want to be, but in the mix – on a relatively limited budget.”

Gazidis also believes that it is time to start challenging for titles again rather than merely being pleased just to qualify for the Champions League.

“We have been consistent, in that we haven’t slid backwards or gone forwards. Now we need to go forwards.

“It is not enough to watch a video of a last-minute scramble to get over the line and into fourth place.”
