Recently-sacked Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is expected to make a swift return to football management after emerging as PSG’s number one candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

Mancini is out of work following his dismissal from the Etihad Stadium after a disappointing season in which his side failed to win a trophy. Malaga’s Manuel Pellegrini has all but been confirmed as his replacement.

Ligue 1 champions PSG look set to lose their current boss to Real Madrid, who have identified him as the best replacement for Jose Mourinho, who has left the club to rejoin Chelsea in the Premier League.

Although PSG have been keen to keep hold of Ancelotti, he has expressed a desire to speak with Madrid, and the two sides could be close to agreeing a compensation deal that would see the Italian move to the Bernabeu this summer.

The French side will then look to another Italian, Mancini, as his replacement, despite previous links with preferring French managers such as Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Laurent Blanc, formerly manager of Bordeaux and the French national team.

Mancini has also found himself linked with another job in Ligue 1 with newly-promoted Monaco, though they seem set to stick with current boss Claudio Ranieri. His former club Inter Milan also showed an interest in the 48-year-old, though they have confirmed the appointment of Walter Mazzarri from Napoli as their new head coach.

It is thought that Mancini will look to make a raid on some of his former players from Manchester City, as he will once again enjoy the luxury of having significant funds to spend on players as he did in his time in England.

With PSG’s current star centre-back Thiago Silva being strongly linked with Barcelona, Mancini may try to sign City captain Vincent Kompany as a replacement. The Belgian found his best form under the guidance of Mancini and may be tempted to work with him again as new manager Pellegrini will look to bring in some new players of his own. Real Madrid’s Pepe and Valencia’s Adil Rami are two defenders said to be on the Chilean’s shortlist, and that could mean that Kompany doesn’t feature in his plans.

Mancini would also be keen to work with David Silva again, as the Spanish playmaker was one of his best signings as City manager. It seems unlikely that Pellegrini would agree to let the talented midfielder go, though he did struggle to reach his best form for much of the 2012/13 season, and could move if the price is right.

PSG have also been linked with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, as they look to continue their ambitious spending, though these are long-term targets of the club’s owners rather than of Mancini, who will quite possibly not have a say on all the club’s transfer dealings if he joins.
