Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has played down speculation that he could leave the club for Arsenal or Liverpool, according to Sky Sports.

The Bosnian international has been in fine form the Potters over the last couple of years, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers, which has also seen him on the radar of the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.

Begovic joined the club from Portsmouth in 2010, but his future looked in doubt this summer after a difficult season of fighting relegation with Stoke. However, the appointment of Mark Hughes as the club’s new manager looks to have given him a fresh desire to improve at the Britannia Stadium.

“I am happy to be here and I am happy to stay here,” he said. “I am looking forward to reporting back in pre-season, meeting the new manager and staff and cracking on with the new season.”

Begovic will face more competition for the number one spot next season with the arrival of talented young goalkeeper Jack Butland from Birmingham City, though the 25-year-old says he relishes the competition from his team-mates.

“Jack is a good up and coming keeper and everyone knows about Thomas and the qualities he has,” he added.

“We have a strong group of goalkeepers and I am looking forward to being part of it.”
