The new Everton boss wants to keep Leighton Baines at Goodison Park.
New Everton manager Roberto Martinez wants to reward defender Leighton Baines with a new contract according to Sky Sports.
The Spaniard wants to keep last year’s Everton player of the year at Goodison Park amid interest from Manchester United.
New Manchester United manager David Moyes wants to be re-united with Baines at Old Trafford.
Moyes brought Baines to Everton from Wigan and has seen the left back blossom into one of the most reliable full backs in the Premier League.
One of the first issues that Moyes will have to deal with at United is the future of current left back Patrice Evra.
The defender has played a key role in the clubs recent success but is getting older and more injury prone, meaning he will have to be replaced sooner or later.
Moyes looks set to have lined up Baines for the role but will have a fight on his hands with his former club wanting to keep the left back.
Now Martinez has stated that he wants to offer the left back a new contract saying, “It is very important and it’s a case of rewarding players who have been phenomenal for the football club. I think Leighton is in that category”.
Recently Everton chairman Bill Kenwright told Moyes not to bother bidding for Baines.
