Liverpool are reportedly closing in on an £8m deal to sign Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet according to the Daily Mail.

Brendan Rodgers has been pursuing the highly rated Belgian international for some time and now it appears that the only obstacle to overcome is the matter of an adequate fee and the difference in valuation between the two clubs is now fairly small.

Liverpool have made a £7m bid but the Black Cats, who seems resigned to losing the 25 year old custodian, are after £10m so an increased bid of £8m may just do the trick.

The move to bring in Mignolet will leave many wondering whether Pepe Reina will return to Barcelona to act as a replacement for Victor Valdes, who has confirmed his intention to leave the Catalan club.

Mignolet is considered one of the best keepers in the Premier League but is currently playing second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois in terms of the Belgian national team set-up, with the Chelsea youngster, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, getting the nod in all seven of Belgium’s World Cup qualifiers thus far.

A move to Liverpool could help garner more attention and may be the sort of high-profile switch that could assist in his pursuit of a more prominent role in national team matters, all the more important given the 2014 World Cup Finals are now less than a year away.

If a move to sign Mignolet is successful he would be Liverpool’s third summer signing, following Kolo Toure’s free transfer move to Anfield and Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas’s recent arrival on Merseyside.
