Tottenham fancy their chances of making a big-name signing in the form of Roma forward Erik Lamela this summer, according to the Telegraph.

The 21-year-old has been a stand-out performer for the Serie A side this season, establishing himself as one of the best young players in Italy at the moment.

He has only been at the Stadio Olimpico for two seasons since joining from River Plate in his native Argentina, and has expressed a desire to stay and continue his development with the club, as he feels happy and settled with life in Rome.

However, the influence of Franco Baldini as Spurs’ new director of football has increased their chances of tempting Lamela into a move, as the two previously worked together at Roma.

Tottenham are on the lookout for new attacking players this summer, and Lamela’s ability to play upfront or behind the striker will prove useful to Andre Villas-Boas’, whose side were somewhat over-reliant on Gareth Bale for goals this season as they missed out on the top four.

The Portuguese coach will be hoping a signing of this calibre will help persuade Bale to turn down the chance of a move to Real Madrid, who are willing to offer as much as £85million for him.

Lamela has also been previously targeted by Chelsea and Manchester City.
